Raja Yoga- 1

Tonight we went for the second session of Raja Yoga at Peepul centre. This is the 8 session (4 week course ie twice per week; Tuesday and Thursday) meditation course organised by Brahma Kumaris of Leicester. The course is free and helps people look 'into' themselves, to attain peace and happiness what ever the situation is. I first went for this course in 2006 (though I did not finish the course at that time); this time I hope I would be able to complete all the eight sessions.

Meditation is the process of re-discovering, remembering and using the positive qualities already dormant with in our selves. From dormant to dominant...

Paramjit (who delivers the course) said that Raja-yoga has 'no single magical solution' to everyone's problems; It gives us the tool to work out our problems and find solutions or happiness. He reminded to constantly say "Iam a peaceful being" ie Om Shanthi....

First session (Tuesday- 03.02.09)

The aim of the course is to become self-sovereign ie become a master of yourself, your mind. Yoga means Connection/ Link/ Union ie a link between you and your mind.

The most important message from last session is about MIND. Mind is a non physical organ- A subtle energy.

In the mind, we first generate a thought, then we visualise these thoughts, analyse these thoughts, process them, remember other similar thoughts, imagine thoughts and take a decision. We are the creator of thoughts and we experience the thought. Every thought is energy. Thoughts determine how we feel.

There are four types of thoughts:
  • Positive
  • Negative
  • Waste
  • Planning
The positive thoughts are peace, happiness, hope, smile, wisdom, truth, freedom, self-respect, co-operation, love unity etc. Positive thoughts are constructive and makes you and people around you better. You have a positive aura or a connotation around you. Your face shows that and other people can feel the positive energy radiating from you; (every thought is 'energy') therefore positive thoughts generate positive energy. Keep on smiling with positive thoughts..Remember, Face is the index of mind..

Negative thoughts are anger, jealousy, frustration, sadness, hatred, lies etc. These are destructive and creates a negative connotation for you and people around you. Mind is like a rubbish bin. If we fill it with anger/ things of past it will generate more stress and bad odour. Remember, Anger is one letter ('D') short of DANGER

Waste thoughts are thoughts that often revolve around the past which we cannot change and do not have any control over. The vast majority (more than 80%) of our thoughts are 'waste' thoughts.

Planning thoughts are Neutral thoughts. Planning thoughts are acted upon creation eg washing face, putting on shirt etc, but do not emotionally affect us ie they do not have a positive or negative connotation associated.

There is no guarantee or certainty what will happen tomorrow or even next second. When you go to bed there is no guarantee that we will wake up tomorrow and every day we wake up, be happy and feel that we have a great day ahead of us, filled with all optimism and happiness. This also doesn't mean that we shouldn't plan anything; there should be a general planning, but not probably the finer aspects..that's all in the hands of someone/something else and this is not in our control.Yesterday is History; Tomorrow is mystery; and Today is ' the present' ie what you have. so enjoy it, be happy.

What we say, what we do and what we feel all have their origin in mind. The energy of the human mind is thought. The first and foremost step in Rajayoga is to recognise your thoughts. Try to have positive thoughts ie you are challenging yourself the way you think; between you and your mind. When one fully understand and harness it, one is able to master ones life and produce thoughts which give the most happiness and peace.

Second Session (Thursday 05.02.09)

The aim of todays session is to realise the true identity of self.

Who are you? Paramjit asked

One said 'Iam David'
Another said 'Iam a Human being'
Some one else said 'Iam a divine light inside'
Another person said 'Iam a Personality' (interesting to note that 'Persona' means Mask)
Another opinion was " Iam playing a role" ie a wife/ mother/ daughter etc

So is that a difficult question? Simple question but difficult to answer.
Who Am I? What is my true identity
The answer is Iam not 'this body', but Iam the soul/ spirit

The whole idea of this session is to change from " Body Consciousness" to "Soul Consciousness". when we are in the 'body conscious state' like majority of us are we are attached to conditions ie everything is based on the role we have. The whole happiness is on being the role/ external things..... like attachment to a person ie role of a father/ mother/ sister/ brother or Identifying ourselves with the qualification/ creation/ your new car etc.

When some one is in "Soul Consciousness" everything will be unconditional.. so it will be GIVING and not TAKING as in 'Body conscious' state......

Everything in the world will change. Our body/ cells are replaced regularly and we are not 'our body' a few years ago. Cells are constantly being removed and replenished. The only thing that doesn't change is CHANGE itself. According to laws in physics, Energy cannot be created nor destroyed and so Soul is eternal (but body will change)

Paramjit said about the example of a Surgeon at the hospital. A Surgeon when he operates on some one asks to bring in 'the patient' and if unfortunately the patient dies asks to take out 'the body' illustrating the point of soul and body. Understanding that you are soul being and not body being can be relatively easy, but to realise or experience that 'truth' may take time.

Yoga (Application) which was based on the control of the body physically and implied that a perfect control over the body and the senses led to knowledge of the ultimate reality. A detailed anatomical knowledge of the human body was necessary to the advancement of yoga and therefore those practising yoga had to keep in touch with medical knowledge. (Romila Thapar, A History of India, volume one).

I suggest : Mind and brain are two distinct things. Brain is anatomical entity whereas mind is functional entity. Mind can be defined as the function of autonomic nervous system (ANS). It is claimed that mind can be brought under conscious control through the practice of meditation. But how? ANS is largely under hypothalamic control which is situated very close to optic chiasma (sixth chakra or ajna chakra). Protracted practice of concentration to meditate at this region brings functions of ANS say mind under one’s conscious control.

ANS is further divided into parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS) and sympathetic nervous system (SNS). On the basis of these facts I have discovered a mathematical relationship for spiritual quotient (S.Q.). Spiritual Quotient can be expressed mathematically as the ratio of Parasympathetic dominance to Sympathetic dominance. PSNS dominates during meditative calm and SNS dominates during stress. In this formula we assign numerical values to the physiological parameters activated or suppressed during autonomic mobilization and put in the formula to describe the state of mind of an individual and also infer his/her level of consciousness.

Meditation is the art of looking within and science of doing nothing. We don’t use anything in meditation. We just try to concentrate to meditate at some point in human anatomy known as ‘chakra’ in Indian System of Yoga. The current of mind is flowing outward through the senses and unconsciously. The mind comes at rest gradually through regular practice of meditation. Then comes self realization and enlightenment. Protracted practice of meditation under qualified guidance will help to manage all sort of psychological problems.

Emotional Quotient can also be expressed mathematically as the product of I.Q. and Wisdom Factor. E.Q. stands for Emotional Quotient. An intelligent person may not be wise. But a wise man will always be intelligent. An intelligent person having certain level of positive emotions can be said as wise. An intelligent person lacking wisdom will turn autocrat. A wise man will always be a democrat who respects others existence.

Some may raise doubt that how could be the Wisdom quantified? The answer is simple -if Mental Age of I.Q. can be quantified then Wisdom can also be quantified, of course, comparatively with more efforts. Wilhelm Stern had given the formula of I.Q.. It is, Mental Age/ Chronological Age x 100. Spiritual Quotient (S.Q.) leverages both E.Q. and I.Q.

Radha Soami Faith is a branch of Religion of Saints like Kabir, Nanak, Paltu, and others. Soamiji Maharaj is the founder of this Faith. You may call It like New Wine in Old Bottle.

Maslow has given Hierarchy of Needs. At the top of it is need for self-actualization or self-realization.

In our society we should learn To Live and Let Live and help to satisfy others need. When the lower order needs, physiological and sociological both, are satisfied then only a person think to satisfy need for self-realization in true sense. Else he/she may spend all his/her life to satisfy at the most the need for self-expression instead of self-realization.

It is, therefore, the duty of every responsible person, at the least, of our society to give serious thought over it.

For the satisfaction of need for self-realization i.e. establishment of harmony of individual consciousness with that of universal consciousness we need following three things:

1. Mater or Guru (A Self-Realized Soul)
2. Secret of Levels of Universal Consciousness
3. Method for traversing the path.

Thanks Satsangi. Very interesting observations regarding EQ and SQ.

Wisdom is recognised as a virtue in Cultural, Religious and philosophical sources for eg: Confucius states that wisdom can be learned by reflection, imitation and experience. Buddha says a wise person is endowed with good bodily conduct, good verbal conduct & good mental conduct and a wise person does actions that are unpleasant to do but give good results and doesn’t do actions that are pleasant to do but give bad results. Aristotle(in Metaphysics) defines wisdom as the knowledge of cause ie why things exist in a particular fashion...but how do we measure wisdom?

I agree that Spiritual Quotient or Spiritual Intelligence is possibly the ultimate state of realization that encompasses IQ, EQ and many other factors (known and unknown)

Very interesting comments from Pradeep on Raja Yoga. He has conceptualised the whole Raja Yoga programme very well ! It is nice to see a Doctor being so open minded about alternate therapy, though my GP had also said alternate therapy will help in the long run to relax when I was stressed up doing PhD. I think the Brahma Kumaris are doing a great noble service by conducting free meditation programmes. I started the Raja Yoga meditation in December. Greatly astonished by how focussing on the centre of fore-head and on the golden light can calm the mind and relax the body ! I have experienced inner peace and became aware of the great mystery of life by becoming soul conscious. I also started experiencing Shiv Baba’s grace and blessing by seeking his protection and love. Thanks to Parmjit’s for guiding. His lectures are interesting and inspiring and he speaks with a sublime mode of self-assurance ! He is an enlightened soul. I have been attending follow-up classes every Wednesday at Herbert Avenue. This week’s murali is on year of being equal to the Father and focuses on staying in the angelic stage of being double-light and practise being bodiless. Thanks to Pradeep for introducing me to Raja Yoga meditation.

Om Shanti

If you are interested in the Brahma Kumaris, the whole show is laid out here clearly, warts and all.

Good luck.

BTW, what they teach is NOT the "ancient Raja Yoga". They teach surrendering your mind to a spirit entity that speak through their mediums and which they believe is the God of all religions and they are the only chosen one.

Now I come to deal with Spiritual Quotient (S.Q.), the term which was first coined by Danah Johar . Although she dealt with this very important aspect of Spirituality very well, she did not explain any mathematical relationship for this. She ends up with describing only Spiritual Intelligence of an individual. Anything which deserves to be called as ‘Quotient’ needs to show some sort of mathematical relationship as Wilhelm Stern did for Intelligence Quotient (I.Q.). Stern described I.Q. in terms of Mental Age and Chronological Age whereas I did this for S.Q. in terms of Parasympathetic dominance to sympathetic dominance. Parasympathetic nervous system and sympathetic nervous system are the two parts of autonomic nervous system (ANS) which is largely under the control of hypothalamus. That is why we need to have some idea about central and peripheral nervous system.

B.K. Anand (1975) writes in his article “Yoga and Medical Sciences” “On the physical functioning of the body various types of yogic kriyas or exercises do result in an improvement of such functioning of the different structures in the body, whether these may belong to the muscular system, or respiratory system, or the cardio-vascular system, or the activities of the gastro-intestinal system and so on. Yogabhyas results in improvement of certain body functions through its influence on the nervous system, both central and peripheral…..functioning of the body is so much dependent on the optimum functioning of the central nervous system,….the most important structure required for the maintenance of the normal homeostatic condition in the body is the central nervous system operating through its peripheral nerves. This is achieved more through the functioning of the autonomic nervous system rather than of the somatic nervous system.”

.One interesting pattern of bodily changes occur in the state of meditative calm. It involves changes in the activity of the central nervous system and in blood chemistry, as well as in the autonomic nervous system.

Life in Western society is complex and often tension filled. Hour by hour , day by day, the autonomic nervous system is mobilised to help us deal with the interpersonal and impersonal stresses we encounter. Autonomic mobilisation is the basis of psychosomatic. We should reverse the autonomic mobilistation.

Psychologists have been interested themselves in the age old practice of meditation. Yoga might be described as a condition of inner tranquility. Practitioners of Yoga have dramatically reduced heart rates and breathing rates. Their EEG patterns are altered in ways indicative of relaxation. The consumption of the oxygen by the body decreases, the resistance of the skin to the passage of a weak electrical current rises (a sign of relaxation), and the blood flow in muscles increases. The level of lactic acid in the blood drops considerably during meditation.

On 23rd May a news appeared in various news papers that Craig Venter had created artificial life. He was working over project this since very long along with his team mates. You may also have heard that Johnjoe McFadden has given a Electromagnetic Field Theory of Consciousness/Mind. We all know that Physics describes four fundamental forces in the universe. They are Gravitational Force, Electromagnetic Force, Weak Nuclear Force and Strong Nuclear Force. They are responsible for the creation of particles, subatomic structures, atomic structures, molecules, elements etc. For natural things (life etc.)to be created, natural forces (God Forces) act in natural ways. When man operates and manipulates these forces and creates some new things or old one it is said ‘artificial’. For me everything is natural. Since man is the part of nature so everything created by him, in-vivo or in-vitro, using Forces of Nature is also natural and not artificial.

I have given a theory of consciousness and mind as below:

“Gravitation Force is the Ultimate Creator”, I presented this paper at the 1st Int. Conf. on Revival of Traditional Yoga, held at The Lonavla Yoga Institute (India), Lonavla, Pune in 2006. The Abstract of this paper is given below:

“The Universe includes everything that exists. In the Universe there are billions and billions of stars. These stars are distributed in the space in huge clusters. They are held together by gravitation and are known as galaxies. Sun is also a star. Various members of the solar system are bound to it by gravitation force. Gravitation force is the ultimate cause of birth and death of galaxy, star and planets etc. Gravitation can be considered as the cause of various forms of animate and inanimate existence. Human form is superior to all other forms. Withdrawal of gravitational wave from some plane of action is called the death of that form. It can be assumed that gravitation force is ultimate creator. Source of it is ‘God’. Gravitational Field is the supreme soul (consciousness) and its innumerable points of action may be called as individual soul (consciousness). It acts through body and mind. Body is physical entity. Mind can be defined as the function of autonomic nervous system. Electromagnetic waves are its agents through which it works. This can be realized through the practice of meditation and yoga under qualified meditation instruction. This can remove misunderstanding between science and religion and amongst various religions. This is the gist of all religious teachings – past, present and future.”
